Divesting allows the mineral owner to receive an upfront cash payment that may be invested elsewhere; however, the upside associated with future oil and gas production is not maintained.  While mineral valuations may be substantial even when accounting for discounted present value, timing mineral divestitures with commodity prices may be likened to timing the stock market.
